Human Beings should strive to make the World a better place. Workmate (Virtual Jobs Finder) organization has demonstrated its concern for the environment by initiating a Go-green operation which will ensure the growth of 1 million Trees by 2030. the 20th day of November, 2020 marked the beginning of the journey where Workmate together with the event partners such as the University of Nairobi Office of Career services (UoN OCS), Acorn Holdings (Qwetu Student Residents), UoN College of Agriculture and Veterinary sciences (CAVS), Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI), and Dedan Kimathi Foundation united and made the day a success by planting over 3000 trees and establishing a nursery for 500 trees. Indeed, the train has left the station and is not coming back.
The event partners.
All the organizations that partnered with Workmate have a common characteristic- concern for the environment and championing for societal well-being. The UoN OCS under the leadership of Dr. Johnson Kinyua is renowned for environmental care and nurturing of students to be responsible and useful persons in the community through career and life skill guidance. The UoN CAVS and WMI have the mandate to train specialist who impact the environment substantially through the knowledge that they acquire. Additionally, WMI’s objective is to continue with the works and ideals of Wangari Maathai who was an environmental activist. Qwetu residence and Dedan Kimathi Foundation have also been in the fore front in raising the forest cover by planting trees.
Tree Planting Session
The event commenced at the Wangari Maathai Institute where Professor David Mugnai, The Director WMI, welcomed the attendants and the tree planting session begun. The event partners and a few students planted a variety of fruit tree seedlings within the institute. The team then proceeded to Kanyariri veterinary farm where Workmate team led by John Digital, and the other event partners ensured a successful planting of over 3000 trees. The trees were carefully planted by use of natural manure. Individuals expressed their love for the environment by watering the just planted trees and even collecting the polythene papers and water bottles within the farm to prevent environmental pollution through the plastic materials.
Future Plans
Planting trees may not be a demanding task per se; real effort is seen in ensuring the growth and survival of the plants. Notably, a number of individuals have a tendency of planting trees, taking photos in the particular sites and then leave the seedlings to survive at the mercy of nature. However, this is not the case with the Go green 1 million trees by 2030 initiative. Workmate committed not only to facilitate the planting of the trees but also to ensure the growth of the plants. Such would demand regular visitation to the site for weeding, watering and treating the trees as they grow progressively. The Workmate team has since then conducted substantial visit back to the farm to check how the plants are responding and are committed to ensuring the survival of a considerable percentage.
In the wake of several emerging issues such as global warming, projects such as tree planting are an effective response from humankind to mitigate further environmental damage. As such, Workmate is committed to the noble task of increasing the forest cover by planting one million trees by 2030. Organizations that have partnered with Workmate have seen the importance of conserving the environment. Wanjugu Kimathi of Dedan Kimathi Foundation notes that the trees have varied significant roles, they helped freedom fighters to hide during wars. We encourage more organizations of goodwill to join us in the move to ensure that we achieve our objective of a green ecosystem. The target is realistic and attainable. We support the go green Movement, so do you!
