In the age of technology and information freelancing has become a gift that we leverage to elevate our lives and our businesses. Freelancing has given people with expertise in different areas to create an environment where they can advance their skills to the world by being their own boss. The freelancing process has been well embraced in our society that it has blood other aspects of freelancing such as the digital nomad lifestyle. This lifestyle has allowed freelancers to travel the world and work from any geographical location.
However, there are mistakes that I have done in my freelancing journey that I would like to share with you so that you can avoid them in your journey.
1. Not knowing your value and asserting it
As a freelance you are responsible for stating a rate that attracts the clients you want. Setting a very low rate may hinder some clients from giving you the job while the same can apply when you overcharge.
2. Not saying NO
As a freelancer, you should have the ability to set your working standards and the ability to say NO to some of the client's requests that do not align with your standards.
3. Not identify deal breakers
Just like any other relationship it is important to identify and articulate your deal breakers in your professional relationship and interaction. By doing this you will be able to attract the clients you desire to work with.
4. Not keeping in touch with your former clients
For a freelancer your network is your net worth therefore, keeping in touch with a client you worked for before is important as it builds and maintains a positive rapport between the two of you. You can engage with your former client by sending them an email to check up on them and also informing them that you are available to take on more projects when they are available.
5. Not adhering to the set deadlines
The freelancing culture allows one to work on their own time with little to no supervision and this can be a vortex that if not carefully watched can derail a freelance. Planning your schedule around the client’s project is important as It allows you to respect the set deadline no matter what happens. This also signals your professionalism to the clients.
